The Jimi Hendrix Experience was an American- British rock band formed in the mid 1960’s. Members included guitarist/vocalist Jimi Hendrix, bassist Noel Redding, and drummer Mitch Mitchell. The band formed in Westminster, England in 1966. The Jimi Hendrix Experience released their debut album in May of 1967. The album was titled Are You Experienced?. The album was very successful selling over 5 million copies in the U.S alone. Hits included “Purple Haze”, “Hey Joe”, and “The Winds Cried Mary”. The album is ranked fifteenth on Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. Four songs off the album were put on Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. The Jimi Hendrix Experience released their second album later that year in December, 1967. The album was titled Axis: Bold as Love. The album didn’t sell as well as the band’s debut album. The album was ranked eighty-second on Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. The Jimi Hendrix Experience released their third album in October of 1968. The album was titled Electric Ladyland. It included one hit which was “All Along the Watchtower”. The album sold slightly better than their previous album. The album ranked number fifty-four on Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. In 1970, Noel Redding left the band. He was replaced by Billy Cox for a short time. In September of the same year, Jimi Hendrix died. The remaining band members left the band and no other studio albums were produced after that.
